Scott Brash said on his Instagram story today that the Spruce Meadows CSIO 5* is his favorite event of the year, and we’re in no position to disagree. The beautiful backdrop of Calgary, the spectacular Nations Cup event, the massive array of FEI riders looking for a little Spruce Glory Pie. And you get to enjoy all of it, too! Here’s the 411:
We’ve got an all-star lineup this week: Belgium’s Rolex Grand Slam defender Gregory Wathelet, Spain’s Sergio Alvarez Moya, France’s Kevin Staut, Germany’s Christian Ahlmann and Philipp Weishaupt, Ireland’s Cian O’Connor, Japan’s Karen Pole, Portugal’s Luciana Diniz, France’s Steve Guerdat, and naturally, a veritable smorgasbord of riders from the USA and Canada – If you like them, they’re probably there. (See the full list here.)
It’s a Nations Cup event, and Team USA is a nice variety of fan-favorites (Beezie Madden and Lauren Hough) and strong up-and-coming riders (Charlie Jacobs and Lillie Keenan). The Canadian Team is a nice all-star cast: Mario Deslauriers, Eric Lamaze, Ian Millar, and Keean White. Both North American teams will present a decent threat to the opposition.
Schedule: From Wednesday to Sunday, FEI classes will run all day in the international ring from 9:30 am MST (11:30 am EST) to 5pm MST. Friday night is the only day featuring night classes, with a 1.60m Cup at 5pm MST and a Six-Bar contest at 7:30.
