Dutch showjumper Harrie Smolders has a lengthy resume that includes finishing 4th in the team event at the 2009 European Championships, competing in the 2010 World Equestrian Games, and many Grand Prix wins.
A bonus accomplishment: the success of his longtime student, Belgium’s Jos Verlooy. Harrie has been training Jos since he was three years old and these days the pair frequently goes head-to-head in the show ring, as they have been on the 2016 Longines Global Champions Tour.
Both ride for the Global Champions League team Antwerp Diamonds (winners of their hometown tour leg this past weekend), the Tour recently caught up with them both to understand just how their training systems and how their partnership works:
