The CSI Basel in Switzerland was held this past weekend, and an all-star crew of European riders turned out to put on their best performance to rack up points for the FEI World Cup Jumping circuit and take home a check to keep the lights on and the sweet feed coming.
But it was Niels Bruynseels of Belgium who slayed the time dragon in the jump-off to win the eighth leg of the tour and a big check of the prize money. Watch his winning round below!
Despite a very tight turn and a hard rub at seven, the rail stayed put to ensure Niels’s victory in front of a warm Swiss crowd. The spectators would have to settle for seeing their hometown favorites make respectable showings in the top placings – with Martin Fuchs in fifth, Steve Guerdat in ninth and Paul Estermann 11th – but not manage the top prize.
Second went to John Whitaker of Great Britain aboard Ornellaia and third went to Australian maven Edwina Topps-Alexander on Lintea Tequila. It was in fact a spectacular finish for mares, with all three podium slots going to the ladies in this class.
