Canada will not field a team for this year’s Olympic Games after a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in which Nicole Walker’s appeal of a doping violation was denied. Walker tested positive for cocaine metabolite at the 2019 Pan American Games, which she says she ingested accidentally by drinking coca tea.
Because Canada qualified for Tokyo by way of its result at the 2019 Pan Ams, Walker’s disqualification also disqualifies her team and negates their result. Now Canada is allowed to enter only one horse/rider combination to compete as an individual in this summer’s Tokyo Games.
The top four teams from the Pan American Games qualify for the Olympics, so Canada’s disqualification has meant that Argentina, which finished fifth, now takes their spot of Olympic qualification.
