Keeping their horses in a semi-rural part of Compton, in the Los Angeles area, the Cowboys see themselves as a model for other Compton residents caught in the often difficult position of being young and Black in America.

The Cowboys see themselves as connecting to the forgotten, repressed record of Black cowboys in America that was whitewashed through films and TV shows until few people now know of this long and fascinating history. Some of the members play polo while others pursue roping and other rodeo events, representing a diversity that is often hidden in equestrian sports.
